Refuse and Illegal Dumping

Illegal Dumping, convenience Blue Bins and Black Bag waste:

Illegal Dumping

There is a noticeable increase in illegal dumping within Kenton and the surrounding suburbs that seems to be associated with the seasonal increase in New Builds, Renovations and Maintenance Projects.

There are a couple of unscrupulous contractors and “bakkie builders” who are the culprits!

The truck in the picture above was supplied by the municipality to KOSRA to help collect illegally dumped garden and green waste on a vacant property!

Builders rubble needs to be removed to either Alex or Port Alfred. Kenton doesn’t have a designated builders rubble site at present.

There are some simple remedies; as residents and homeowners please insist that your builders remove building waste and rubble to the designated sites within Ndlambe. Unfortunately it’s not sufficient to just assume that once the rubble has left your “build” that it will be responsibly dumped and or processed.

We ask permanent residents to help KOSRA and Estuary Care by calling out these builders if they witness them illegally dumping their waste as well as reporting these builders, both to the Municipality and KOSRA.

To those builders who continue to throw their “rubble and general waste” onto and into vacant properties, common green protected areas and the adjacent and surrounding bush, we want to warn you that the next step will be to name and shame those that continue this practice. It will then be followed by our insisting that the Municipality and if necessary the Police enforce the relevant By-Laws in order to deal with the perpetrators.

To residents and home owners please note that if rubble or builders waste is traced back to your build you can be held liable for the costs of that rubble being properly and professionally removed!

Blue Bins

Many of our residents and members have no doubt noticed the strategically placed “blue bins” that are dotted around town and many of the recreational common areas.

The only intention for these bins is convenience and to encourage people to deposit their papers and other waste items on leaving the beach and common areas as well as to keep the high traffic areas within the commercial areas of Kenton clean.

Unfortunately there are a number of businesses and no doubt residents or visitors who see fit to use these bins to off load their domestic and commercial black bag waste rather than waiting for the weekly municipal collection days or using the other designated waste sites in and around our town.

The blue bins in Westbourne, Eastbourne, beaches, slipway car parks and tow paths or servitudes are not intended for domestic or commercial black bag waste. Once dumped these bags sit for days before collection and are susceptible to damage by bad weather, dogs and vagrants that break these bags open.

Black Bag Waste

Again there is a noticeable increase in these bags being dumped in servitudes, in vacant plots and at the blue bins.

Click here to view the domestic waste collection days for Kenton.

We would request that black bag domestic waste is only put out on the morning of the respective collection days and or the night before.

These bags are vulnerable to bad weather, stray dogs and waste pickers looking for cans or food.

Preferably these bags are placed in your own rooster boxes or wheelie bins out of the way of dogs and only on the allocated days. If your home is rented please ensure this applies too.

Recyclables

Our local recycling company managed by Kellis has made significant and noticeable strides to improve the collection of recyclables. There is little excuse any longer not to practice the sorting of your good waste for recycling purposes.

Cans, tins, plastics, cardboard and glass are valuable recyclable commodities that should not land up in land fill sites. Every little bit counts!

We thank the many of you who do practice and support recycling. With what hopefully should shortly be a bumper holiday season in and around Kenton we would like to encourage the leasing agents, self catering accommodation providers, Air BnB’s and other seasonal accommodation vendors to enlighten and educate their clients and guests on the recycling efforts. Every bit counts!
