Dear Kenton Community
With the start of our KOSRA WhatsApp Group we are able to communicate more effectively and efficiently. If you are not part of the WhatsApp Group we urge you to join. It is not a busy group but rather one that focuses on pertinent issues relative to the town. Click here to join if you have not yet done so.
We will continue to post on our Facebook page, send out regular blog posts and maintain the website.
That said, herewith a summary of our ongoing efforts:
Roads
As mentioned, our approach is to attend to the roads that are in good or fair condition to arrest any further deterioration before tackling the roads that are in a worse condition and require more substantial expenditure.
We have already improved the drainage on many roads to prevent standing water and to ensure all surface water is directed off the roads effectively. We have patched potholes and rejuvenated road surfaces with a diluted emulsion where roads have less than 25% potholes over the surface area. On roads with more than 25% potholes a slurry seal has been applied – you will notice this on parts of Westbourne and Erica roads.
Successful road rejuvenation project has impacted the following roads to date:
- Bathurst
- Eastbourne/Pizzarella intersection
- Erica
- Parts of Westbourne
- Top of van der Stel
- Rothesay round-about intersection
- Merryhill drive
- Northwood
Residents in roads such as Donkin Drive, parts of Westbourne and parts of Elliot have clubbed together and funded the resurfacing/paving of their own roads. We would like to encourage ‘Street Captains’ to engage with neighbors and gauge the interest to resurface individual streets. KOSRA is ready to work with ‘Street captains’ and will assist with the collection of monies and payments to suppliers.
KOSRA continues to communicate with Ndlambe to ensure we get our fair share of the 2024/2025 budget allocation. There have been several developments with Ndlambe to block pave a further portion of Westbourne Road using MIG funding. They are also considering our request to supply materials for the maintenance works we are undertaking. There are some indications of further funding being made available for road upgrades, we are being kept abreast of developments in this regard.
General Valuation Roll
The new valuations were implemented from 1 July 2024 and will run for 5 years, by now many of you would have noticed your revised rates bill. There were 131 appeals and 112 were successful in getting their values adjusted downwards. We are also hoping for a small adjustment to the rates factor.
2024/25 Budgets
KOSRA did have significant input into the budget discussions. These inputs have been circulated and can be found on our WhatsApp group, website or facebook page. Ndlambe have agreed to engage with us earlier in the process next year. There is however a glimmer or hope that we will be allocated an adequate maintenance budget.
On a happier note, KOSRA did manage to increase the allocated roads budget for the whole of Ndlambe from R250k to R6m. Still no where near enough but it’s a move in the right direction.
The Dune
We await the environmental report from MER – the consultant company working on the environmental impact study, on the best way to manage the ‘growing’ dune to the East of the Bushmans River mouth. An update on this will be provided once this report is in hand.
Water
Challenges continue with the handover of the reverse osmosis plant from Amatola to NuWater. It has been suggested that an independent consultant is appointed to assist with this handover. Until this time we will continue to experience water outages as per the schedule published by Amatola. KOSRA will commit to publish these outages as we get them.
Waste and Recycling
We would like to thank the donors who continue to support Kellis and his efforts. This initiative is running smoothly and positive progress has been made.
For those who do not know, the recycling trailer is in Kenton, opposite BUCO every Tuesday and Thursday from 08h30 – 11h00. We have engaged with a number of restaurants in town as well as the bowling and tennis clubs who have agreed to gather their recyclables for collection. All this goes a long way to ensure the success of this initiative and to job creation.
Again, we would urge the community to rather make donations into the KOSRA account referencing recycling versus tipping the staff on site. These tips are counter productive as they do not make their way into sustaining the business. Thank you for the kind donation of three months worth of fuel, this has gone a long way in assisting Kellis to maintain the level of service. Again, thank you to all who continue to donate towards the success.
Security
KOSRA have made a donation towards the cost of a high-tech night vision drone for use in Kenton and Bushmans. This will help to continue the excellent work by the Night Watch team who watch over Kenton and the surrounds.
As you know, KOSRA will continue to fund additional security guards over the peak season. These guards go a long way to ensure the safety of the young adults who are often seen walking home long after dark.
Beautification of Kenton
In the next month KOSRA will be putting a lot of effort into trimming of trees, tow paths, walkways down to the beach, repair to jetty’s and the general up keep of our town. Again we encourage you all to help by ensuring your pavements and surrounds are kept neat and tidy. Encourage your gardeners to trim overgrown grass around street signs, drainage areas and trim grass which may be growing into the road, also over hanging trees – if they are on your property or verge and overhang onto the road lets try keep them trimmed.
Thank you to all who continue to make donations. To make a donation, please click here.
Warm regards
KOSRA Team
